King Watzmann

One of the most famous mountains in the world
According to legend, the land was once ruled by the cruel King Waze or Wazemann. With his wife and children he spread fear and terror. When he trampled a peasant family with his steed, the peasant woman cursed him. The earth opened up, spat fire and turned the king and his family to stone.


Here tradition still has a value
There is no rigid schedule. The overwhelming nature sets the rhythm of life.


Customs and traditions are passed on and cultivated from generation to generation in the Berchtesgadener Land.
A relic from Celtic times and Christianised by Saint Nicholas, wild figures in fur and straw with bells, called Kramperl and Buttnmandl, parade through Berchtesgaden on Saint Nicholas' Day.
